National Library


Felipe V created the Royal Library Public Library Palace in 1712. During the nineteenth century’s, with the seizure and the rise of the bibliophile, joined the BNE most valuable old books and the library own. In 1836 changed its name to the National Library.
The current building housing the National Library and the Museum of the Book firstly was Francisco Jareño and finished by Antonio Ruiz Salces. It opened its doors in March 1896, after the commemoration of the fourth centenary of the discovery of America.
The facade on Serrano Street continues to house the collections of the National Archaeological Museum. The National Historical Archive and Museum of Modern Art shared the same building until they were transferred to their respective headquarters.
The decoration of the facade as the pediment sculptures have a very significant artistic reading between the figures appearing Alfonso X the Wise, San Isidro, Antonio de Nebrija, Luis Vives and Lope de Vega, get others.
The BNE is the agency responsible for the deposit of bibliographic and documentary heritage of Spain. Dedicated to collecting, cataloging and maintaining bibliographic and custody over 28 million publications produced in country since the early eighteenth century.
