National Bank

The headquarters of the Bank of Spain is located in the city of Madrid, with facades to the Plaza de Cibeles, the Calle de Alcalá, the Paseo del Prado and Calle de los Madrazo and Calle del Marqués de Cubas. The Bank of Spain, as an institution, was created in 1856, following the merger of Banco de Isabel II with Banco de San Fernando in 1847, and its first home was the building of the Five Major Guilds, located across the street from Atocha in the capital.

The work on the new building was made following the project of the architects Eduardo Adaro and Severiano Sainz de la Lastra. The building will be inaugurated on March 3, 1891 by King Alfonso XIII and his mother Queen Maria Cristina. The plant is distributed in parallel bays to a series of courtyards aligned with the axes of the Paseo del Prado and Alcalá articulated by the diagonal part of the chamfer.

The facades collect decorative eclectic repertoire, but the sobriety of sockets and ground floors accentuate the idea of representative strength corresponding to the host institution. The proper size gradation vain in the various plants and their variety outweigh the strong horizontality of the whole. In 1999 he was declared a Cultural of Spain.
